I've joined a few webrings, and I've added one of my own. Fiction Bloggers attempts to connect fan (and original) fiction authors who Blog regularly. Does this fit your description? I've borrowed my parents' copy of No Mean City by Eric Arthur. Although this isn't the same as going into Toronto and researching the era, it should point me in the right direction on a number of things.
