Writing Update

I’ve a couple of additions to my portfolio. These articles appeared this week in local and regional publications.

My latest article with Business Edge can be found here. It talks about the Perimeter Institute, a research institute for theoretical physics that’s here in town and making a lot of waves. Check out my article for a history, or go to the source. It’s an exciting opportunity: an institute designed to last 100 years on private funding while it pushes back the boundaries of knowledge in quantum physics.

Pure research does not get the attention it deserves, either from private industry, public interest or even from academia; the benefits are often too far in the future to see. But pure research provides us with the big discoveries that change everything. Yeah, I caught that sense of excitement visiting the Institute and talking to its director of communications, but I think the excitement is real, and I’m quite proud to have this institute in my city.

My second article for the K-W Record’s Community Editorial Board ran this past Monday. A PDF version can be found here. I had fun writing this. You may think I’m exaggerating somewhat about the bizarre nature of Kitchener’s street network, but come visit someday. You’ll see what I mean.

Erin and I are going to head into Toronto to meet up with Cameron and try out the new Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie. It’s gotten middling reviews, but they’ve all talked about how Disney’s been marketing it improperly. We did see one trailer that made use of Stephen Fry’s voice, and that struck me as being on the mark. I’ll tell you what I think of it after I see it.

I have two more writing deadlines coming up, both in non-fiction. Not sure when I’ll be able to get back to my fiction writing. Soon, I hope. Rosemary and Perpetua need some attention.

It’s Erin’s birthday today, by the way. After 11 days of being a year younger than me, she joins me in age 33. If we were hobbits, we could vote and drink, now. It’s ironic, then, that Erin can’t be drinking anything for a little while…
